Marching Along

mar23

Time for our monthly report. First off: the graph:

Progress

As you can see, progress since our last post has been phenomenal, and we’re confident that a demo release isn’t far off at all. We don’t feel comfortable releasing our deadlines or goals, but we’re realllllllly close and we’re confident that if we don’t hit them, we’ll definitely be in the ballpark.

So, let’s clear the air a bit. Earlier this month we announced our editor would be leaving WiP, and we weren’t entirely sure how this would impact the demo release. We want the experience to be as consistent as possible, so having the writing conform to the standards of ex-staff seemed problematic. However, we’ve been fortunate to have really in-depth criticism from our beta participants regarding the writing thus far so we can safely say that the absence of a dedicated editor won’t delay us at all. Our testers have already pointed out a large amount of really obvious problems that our previous editor overlooked, so you shouldn’t have any reasons to worry about the quality suffering because of a last minute wrench in the system. Furthermore, we have two potential dedicated editors lined up and both are in the beta, so the quality should be consistent post-demo as well.

So hey, we’re in a pretty good spot all things considered. We got to actually read WiP as a visual novel this past week and we’re really excited about that. Hopefully we won’t keep you waiting too long!

February Write-Up

feb23

Welcome back! Another month means another progress update. There’s nothing much to say for this month sadly, except for that we’re still working hard on churning out content and are are obviously looking past the demo as well.

See you next time!

Demo Progress

jan20

Hello again! We hope you enjoyed last month’s writing samples, music and art. Now that the holidays are out of the way we’re back to working on our demo. We have the entirety of our assets listed off, so now it’s just a matter of sitting it down and getting it done. Updates until then are going to be mostly light on content, but we plan to keep you updated on the demo’s progress with a handy dandy bar chart, updated on a monthly basis. That’s not to say don’t expect anything else from us, but more like making content for the blog has taken a backseat to actual dev work, so we aren’t going to actively be creating media to share here until we get the demo out the door.

So without further ado, here’s our first monthly update on our demo’s progress! Note that the “writing” bar is representative of work that’s been created but not proofed. When we’re comfortable with the writing the “editing” bar will be updated.

Demo Progress for January

So there you have it. After we wrote out the entirety of our assets, we were left with over 10 pages of content to create (over 6 of which are sprites!) so we have a bit to get through yet, but hopefully it’ll go by quick.

A Salty Christmas

dec23 Time for our December progress report!

With a lot of the devs having to deal with finals this month on top of the holidays, we went into this month expecting it to be a bit sluggish work-wise. Despite that, we got a modest amount of work done on all fronts. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to fully edit the demo writing to something we’d deem acceptable for feedback like we originally planned, but there was still progress on the writing side, both in terms of general editing as well as writing past the demo’s 20 scenes. We didn’t work as fast as normal, but make no mistake that we did make a good amount of progress this month, and we expect the output to increase once we get out of this busy time of year. We’ve got a schedule and roughly know when we want to put the demo out.

Given the holidays, we wanted to end this post with a few presents for you. To start things off, we’d like to reveal the fact that the VN starts out in the Fall semester and moves into Winter at the end of act 1. Part of the reason we ended up sticking with Salt Lake City was the snowy climate, and we can’t wait to show it off. Naturally, moving into Winter also means a good part of the VN will take place outside of a school environment/ atmosphere.

We wanted to end this post with a handful of goodies, the first of which is a joint-effort picture between All-Maker and Twrlare:

...

Our second surprise is a set of Winter-themed stories! This will be our first non-April-Fools showing of these characters, and we hope you enjoy them.

[Caprice's Snowman](//salty-salty-studios.com/special/2013/caprice.html) • [Mekki's Christmas Lights](//salty-salty-studios.com/special/2013/mekki.html)

And our final surprise is that accompanying the writing are three Winter-y music pieces for you to enjoy! You can download them here.

We hope you enjoyed this month’s update. Have a great holiday!

Can't Spell November without "CG"

nov27 This past month has been a busy one. The biggest announcement we have to make is that the entirety of the demo has been written in its first draft, and will be put in the build in December as soon as we finish the first round of editing. In it’s current state, we’re looking at 20 scenes at a total of 30,322 words, though that’s likely to change between now and the demo’s actual release.

While Mehkanik, Hearts and All-Maker edit and refine the writing, everyone else will keep creating assets for the demo as quickly as possible. The crowd visual effect is more complex than we initially thought so we’re still working away at that. We’re still working on sprites, music and CGs as well, of course. We still have a lot of work to do, but things are going at a brisk pace.

Speaking of CGs, it occurred to us that we have yet to release a finalized one. So we’re doing that. Now. HERE YOU GO.

Allison can be quite clumsy.

The lineart for our CGs are drawn by All-Maker, with Curchack coloring. Since our backgrounds are rendered at a very basic level in 3D prior to being painted over, we can screencap them at different angles to ensure that the CGs are as accurate as possible. We hope you’re happy with the result.
